Mercedes E-Class, SL, CL, CLS Class SBC Pump Repair
SBC stands for Sensotronic Brake Control. It is a type of ABS pump system commonly found on more expensive Mercedes models such as the E-Class, SL & CL Class and the CLS.
The SBC ABS pump can be categorised as a brake-by-wire system. Mercedes as a company was one of the first vehicle manufacturing organisations to put this device in cars.
The SBC device differs from the usual hydraulic ABS braking system by not having a brake servo at the reservoir. Also the brake pedal is connected to the ECU by wire. The sensors on the brake pedal communicate with the onboard computer, sending information about the brake pedal relating to how hard it was pressed, how fast it was pressed etc. The computer is then able to work out how much pressure is required & activates the braking system, creating the braking force for each wheel through modulators.
The SBC pump has a pre-programmed life expectancy which revolves around the number of brake actuations. Once the limit has been reached, the SBC light may come on or a warning may be triggered relating to brakes on the computer. When this occurs, the SBC pump is de-activated and the hydraulic braking function mode activates. This means that braking pressure is put on the front brakes. This in turn increases the braking distance.
If you run a diagnostic, you will usually see the fault code C2498 with the description “Service Threshold Reached”.
