ABS PUMP, MODULE AND HYDRAULIC UNITS COMBINED – TEST AND REBUILD.

Jaguar seat module 1ABS Pump.

Modern automotive ABS pumps are no longer simple components but sophisticated and self-contained ABS control systems condensed into a single compact unit. In the early days of ABS, its components were scattered throughout the vehicle, creating a cumbersome setup. The pre-charge ABS pump was near the brake booster, the ABS hydraulic unit by the master cylinder, and the ABS module typically under the seat or behind the kick trim. This design required a larger wiring harness, impacting efficiency.

To address these issues, modern ABS units, often referred to as ABS pumps, integrate three main components:

  1. ABS Module: The ABS module serves as the controller for the entire ABS system. Mounted atop the ABS unit, it gathers data on wheel speeds, acceleration, braking effort, brake fluid pressure, and various messages from engine and gearbox systems. Using this information, the ABS module calculates the optimal braking force for each wheel during emergency braking. However, ABS modules can fail, leading to communication issues, internal faults, or continuous operation of the ABS motor.
  2. ABS Hydraulic Unit: This unit controls brake fluid pressure for each road wheel independently. Activating solenoids within the ABS hydraulic block, the ABS module regulates pressure, allowing or preventing fluid flow to each wheel. The hydraulic unit contains the pump necessary for generating the pressure needed to control wheel lock and release. Issues with ABS hydraulic units can result in fluid leaks or pressure sensor failure.
  3. ABS Motor: Attached to the hydraulic unit, the ABS motor drives the pump during emergency braking events. Constant activation of the ABS motor may indicate an internal short in the ABS module. The ABS motor can fail due to water ingress or internal component breakdown.

Test and Rebuild:

When sending the ABS pump for testing and rebuilding, it’s advisable to send the entire unit to aid in the diagnostic process. The ABS unit undergoes testing on specialized rigs simulating real-world conditions. After identifying faults, the unit is rebuilt using higher-rated components and retested to meet manufacturer specifications.

Programming:

Most modern ABS pumps come pre-coded, and during the test and rebuild process, all programming information is retained. This ensures the unit is ready for installation upon return.

Quality:

Rebuilt ABS pumps from this service undergo stringent quality control, with a defect rate below 0.49%. The service caters to franchise dealers and specialist workshops globally.
